Marhaba (“welcome” in Darija) reflects on the historical influence of Islamic culture on Venice and the contemporary questions surrounding migration, belonging and cultural exchange. The work draws on the Mihrab, the prayer niche in a mosque that indicates the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca. Traditionally a fixed architectural element, here it is reimagined as a hand-cut, mobile door, transforming a space of prayer into a symbol of hospitality and openness. Marhaba evokes the idea of a travelling mosque: a temporary, permeable spiritual space that can emerge wherever community, encounter and dialogue become possible.
