Manzi Léon Rwanda, b. 2001

Biography
Manzi Léon is a self-taught visual and digital artist who was born in 2001 in Kigali, Rwanda. For him, painting is not just an act - it's an escape, a source of empowerment, and a way to express what he believes in as he navigates life’s daily challenges. His painterly style brings together expressive brushstrokes to form striking compositions that are both personal and universal.
Deeply influenced by his upbringing, Manzi’s work is a tribute to the resilience, strength, and essential role of women, particularly Black women, in the fabric of everyday life. His greatest inspiration is his mother, and through his art, he celebrates and honors Black women across the globe. To Manzi, women are the key - a full circle - to creation, nurturing, and transformation of the universe.
In his artistic journey, Manzi blends realism with expressive abstraction. He meticulously renders facial features with precision while allowing other elements - especially the lower body forms - to flow with distortion and fluidity. This deliberate contrast becomes a visual language, expressing movement, emotion, and deeper narratives. The tension between control and spontaneity is central to his signature style, reflecting a balance between structure and freedom.
As a rising voice in contemporary African art, Manzi Léon has exhibited in Rwanda, Ghana, Italy and the United States. He is deeply committed to both personal and artistic growth, aiming to become a powerful and transformative voice from Africa. His path is grounded in building strong foundations that will support his evolving creative vision.
Passionate about advocacy, Manzi uses his art to uplift and amplify the voices of Black women worldwide. His vision goes beyond artistic development - he seeks to create meaningful impact and foster change through his creative expression.
