The paintings explore Umdeni—a concept rooted in many African cultures that speaks to family, community, and shared responsibility. While communal life often symbolizes unity and support, these works reveal its complexities: trust can be broken, and those meant to uplift us can also become the source of pain.
Echoing the biblical theme of betrayal, the paintings reflect on the emotional weight of being let down by loved ones. They also honour the quiet sacrifice of those who carry the burden of others, often at great personal cost. Umdeni becomes a lens through which we examine love, loyalty, betrayal, and the price of belonging.
