Eduardo Malé São Tomé e Príncipe, b. 1973
In the Mutilated series, Eduardo Malé explores the human head as a site of memory and symbolism. Using burnt wire, he creates fragile yet powerful forms, hollow inside to represent the castration of thought and the lingering effects of manipulation and control in society.
The fragmented, incomplete heads embody vulnerability and the traces of violence endured, making visible the challenges that shape human consciousness. Despite their emptiness, the sculptures convey a strong presence and resilience. Each head serves as both a memorial to suffering and a testament to human endurance.
Through the raw, blackened wire, Malé transforms absence into a powerful visual statement, where fragility, imperfection, and dignity coexist.
