At the Tsinghua University Art Museum in Beijing opens today Glasstress: The Modern Art Revolution in Venice, a landmark exhibition celebrating glass as a medium capable of conveying innovative languages and revealing new dimensions of contemporary art. The exhibition brings together 56 artists from over 20 countries, presenting more than 60 new works, offering Chinese audiences a large-scale and unprecedented perspective on the expressive potential of glass as a leading contemporary artistic medium.
Among the featured artists is Osaru Obaseki, talented protagonist of the sixth Artist Residency Program hosted by Akka Project Venezia from January 22th to April 21st, 2024, in collaboration with the Berengo Foundation in Murano.
During the residency Obaseki had the opportunity to engage directly with the tradition of glassmaking and explore its possibilities as a sculptural medium under the skillful guidance of the maestros at the Berengo Studio in Murano. Already recognized for her innovative approach to materials, including bronze and the lost-wax casting method, she further developed the dialogue between historical techniques and contemporary artistic languages, culminating in a sculptural work in glass.
Osaru Obaseki’s participation in Glasstress, presented through the outcome of her Residency, highlights the value of artist residencies as platforms for cultural exchange and international collaboration. In a context where tradition and innovation intertwine, her presence makes this edition of the exhibition particularly significant, showing how ancient materials can be reinterpreted in a modern key and transcend geographical and cultural boundaries.
