Lidija Khachatourian On The Growing Art Scene In Dubai

NATALIE HANSON, AEWorld, 1 June 2017
Lidija Khachatourian, founder Create Hub Gallery in Dubai, had an unconventional start in the world of art, beginning her career as an accountant. However, after following her true passions, she is now a fully-fledged representative for international artists and exhibition organiser. Create Hub Gallery was founded in 2011, promoting and representing acclaimed artists from around the world, but with a heavy focus on investment in contemporary African artwork. We spoke to Lidija about her transition into the world of art and got her thoughts on the growing art scene in Dubai.

Can you describe what lead you to make the change from being an accountant to becoming an international artist representative and exhibition organiser?
I never felt I was in the right place while being an accountant, didn’t really have any joy. After moving to Dubai 2008, I worked in the family business as an accountant for some time, but with kids and the stress of the new country I just couldn’t do it anymore, so shifted my focus to my family. Then, while helping organize a charity project with my son, I was looking around for places to host the events and it was very hard to find a suitable solution. My research brought me to open Create Hub, which at that time was  a platform for creatives in the UAE (mainly Dubai). Little by little it evolved into a concept store then in 2014, during our family holiday in NYC, I met Charles Fazzino and fell in love with his art; soon after I became his agent for the Middle East. So that was my beginning as an artist representative and exhibition organiser!

Why have you chosen to focus your efforts on African art specifically?
Africa has always been in our hearts; it is an upcoming market for many things as well as art. I love working in Africa, the emotions are palpable and true, both the negative and the positive. There are so many talented artists, but struggling to emerge. It came so naturally to focus on them as they deserve it.

Was it a challenge to set your gallery up in Dubai and increase people’s knowledge of what you are doing?

As I was already “active” the transition wasn’t so bad, and I been very lucky to meet many great people here in Dubai. I’m still working hard for my concept to be recognised and for my artists to be appreciated.

How do you feel the Dubai art scene is evolving?
Dubai art scene is booming! In only 10 short years I have seen many changes, and I must say I’m extremely happy with the growing interest and possibilities.

Why do you think it’s important to use platforms such as the exhibition at exhibition at Coya (http://aeworld.com/lifestyle/art/discovering-story-behind-artwork-coya-dubai/) to display art?

What young artists need is support from all sides: financial, promotional and of course a platform where they can meet collectors. Coya ’s attitude towards the art is fantastic, the art should be constantly “in your face” and we need to be surrounded by it. The concept of the “white cube” is changing into showing art in a friendlier way, making it more reachable.

How important do you feel the regional Art Events (Art Dubai, World Art Dubai) are to the art community in Dubai?
They are extremely important. World Art Dubai is opening up possibilities for galleries and artists to get exposure with more affordable prices, while Art Dubai features more established galleries, so there is room for everybody!

What are your future plans for your gallery? Can you share with us any upcoming exhibitions?
We have a new space we are preparing and will have plenty of new artists joining our team. The nature of the exhibitions is still under wraps!
What would your advice be to anyone looking to invest in their first piece of art?
If you love it and you can afford it, buy it!
